The United Kingdom withdrew from the European Union on 31 January 2020. An implementation (or transition) period was agreed between the UK and the EU, which expired on 31 December 2020, until this date EU regulations continued to apply in the UK. After this date, the responsibility for setting and enforcing emissions standards and CO2 emissions regulations transferred to the UK's Department for Transport. Updated standards and zero-emissions vehicles mandates apply for light duty vehicles, starting from 2024. The standards for heavy duty vehicles are in line with those previously enforced by EU regulations.
