Switzerland - Marine

Status

Emissions legislation in Switzerland is controlled by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) but it devolves much of the operational responsibility to individual Cantons (regions or states within the country). Switzerland is not a member of the European Union but in 1995 it began a process of harmonisation of its emissions legislation with that of the EU. It does not have a marine coastline but it is a signatory to Annex VI of the IMO, International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).

Regulations for emissions on the inland waterways of Switzerland were first enforced from 1995 and are now governed both by the EU's regulations and the Lake Constance Shipping Ordinance ("Bodensee" or BSO). Within EU legislation, Inland waterways are controlled by the Inland Waterways section of the off highway Directive (97/68/EC), but this does not cover recreational craft of less than 24m in length. Recreational craft, both on inland waters and on the sea, are covered by the Recreational Craft Directive.
