There are two types of fuel standards operating in Japan; the mandatory standards applied through the "Law on the quality control of gasoline and other fuels" often known as the "Quality Assurance Law" and the additional, voluntary Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), administered by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Sulphur content in fuels has been limited to 10 ppm since 2007.
