Responsibility for emissions legislation, in India, lies with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Indian emissions standards have the name "Bharat" which is Hindi for "India" and are largely equivalent to EU standards, though with a time lag behind those of the EU. Current emission standards are Bharat Stage VI (equivalent to Euro 6), which apply to all vehicles manufactured from 1 April 2020. Prior to this date, Bharat Stage IV (equivalent to Euro 4) standards were in place.
