The Stage V regulation for non-road engines and vehicles (regulation 2016/1628) contains emissions standards for locomotives and railcars; for these engines, type approval according to the Stage V standards is required from 1 January 2020. Regulation 2016/1628 repealed directive 97/68/EC, which was previously in place and contained Stage IIIB requirements for railcars and locomotives.
