Within the European Union, the control of emissions from water craft falls within several legislative areas. Inland waterway vessels of net power higher than 19 kW are currently covered in the Stage V non-road engines emissions regulation. Recreational craft, both on inland waters and on the sea, are covered by the Recreational Craft Directive. Emissions requirements for vessels operating on Lake Constance are covered in a separate regulation.
For sea going vessels with diesel engines of more than 130 kW power output, emissions are covered by the MARPOL legislation of the International Maritime Organization.
