The European Union set mandatory CO₂ emissions limits for passenger cars in 2009; these included the target of achieving fleet average CO₂ emissions of 130 g/km by 2015. In 2011, similar legislation was introduced for LCVs, with an overall fleet average target of 175 g/km to be achieved by 2017. Updated standards are in place from 2020; with a 95 g/km CO₂ emissions target for passenger cars and a 147 g/km CO₂ emissions target for LCVs. A regulation on post-2025 targets for passenger cars and LCVs was published in April 2019 and further enhances the stringency of CO₂ emissions requirements.
