EU - Air Quality

Status

The EU has established a comprehensive set of air quality objectives with two directives, the air quality directive and the National Emission Ceilings Directive (NECD). The directives on air quality provide limits for airborne concentrations of the key pollutants and the NECD gives overall national and EU-wide limits for emissions. The current National Emission Ceilings Directive was published in December 2016 and provides national emission reduction commitments that are applicable from 2020. An updated air quality directive was issued in November 2024.
