Emissions legislation in China is the responsibility of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (formerly the Ministry of Environmental Protection). Separate regulations are in place for controlling emissions from non-road diesel and spark ignition engines. Stage III diesel regulations were in place since October 2014, Stage IV standards are mandatory starting from 1 December 2022.
For small spark ignition engines, Stage II standards are in place since 1 January 2013 for non-hand held equipment and since 1 January 2015 for hand held equipment.
