China - Marine

Status

China is a signatory to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) MARPOL (Marine Pollution) agreement which sets NOx emissions limits for marine diesel engines with power higher than 130 kW. Phase I and II standards for marine engines were published in August 2016 and will apply, from 1 July 2018 and 1 July 2021 respectively, to engines installed on river and coastal vessels with power higher than 37 kW. The new standards will run in parallel with the IMO standards.

Three Chinese Emission Control Areas were declared in 2015; fuel sulphur concentration limits apply to these.
