Transport Canada developed emissions standards for locomotives under the Railway Safety Act; these were first published in draft form in June 2016. The Locomotive Emissions Regulations came into force on 9 June 2017. They mandate emissions standards for locomotives in line with the relevant EPA Tier 4 standards.
