California - Motorcycles & Mopeds

Status

Emissions regulations are established by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and current motorcycle emissions standards, which have been applicable since 2008, are harmonised with the Federal regulations. The standards provide limit values for HC and CO, for engines of 50 cmto 279 cm3, and HC + NOX and CO, for engines with displacement greater than 280 cm3. The HC + NOX limits for the latter group are applied on a corporate average basis. A regulatory proposal covering future emissions standards and a zero-emissions motorcycle programme was published in May 2023, but was then withdrawn.
