California - Marine
Status
Emissions standards for spark-ignition engined vessels are mostly harmonised with the US Federal legislation although the dates of introduction have been different.
Non-propulsion (auxiliary) gasoline marine engines (this category includes auxiliary propulsion for sailboats) are regulated under California's small (below 25 hp) and large (25 hp and greater) non-road engine regulations. Emissions from auxiliary and propulsion diesel engines below 50 hp are controlled under California's non-road engine category.
Engines used in certain commercial vessels operating in Californian waters are subject to commercial harbour craft regulations. These engines are required to be upgraded to the US federal Tier 1 or 2 levels, as applied to new vessels, within certain time frames dependent upon the year of original manufacture.
