Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions regulations are in place in California for light duty and heavy duty vehicles:

  • Light Duty: LEV III standards were developed in conjunction with the federal EPA and are applicable from 2017. Several major manufacturers agreed a voluntary framework to implement GHG standards that are stricter than the revised federal standards, for model years 2021 to 2026.

  • Heavy Duty: The Phase 1 EPA standards were adopted by California and were in place for model years 2014 to 2018. The California Air Resources Board jointly developed the Phase 2 standards with the federal authorities; Phase 2 standards apply in California from April 2019.
