Australia is a member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and implements its standards under Australian law. These apply to ships with engines of greater than 130 kW power output and provide limit values for NOx emissions and for sulphur levels in fuel oil.

Emissions standards for spark ignition marine engines are in place since 1 July 2018.
