Fuel standards in Australia are administered by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, since July 2022. Previously, the responsibility for fuel standards was with the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, from 2020, and prior to this it was held by the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment. Fuel quality standards were first introduced in 2002. An updated standard for gasoline was issued in 2024, the currently applicable diesel specification was issued in 2019.
