In 1998, the National Environmental Protection Council (NEPC) adopted national ambient air quality standards to be applied in all states and territories. The standards are set in a National Environmental Protection Measure (NEPM) and cover particulates, ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and lead. Updated standards are effective from February 2016.
