South Africa - Fuels

Status

Emissions legislation and fuel quality in South Africa are the responsibility of the Department of Energy. South Africa's original plan of moving to Euro 4, equivalent, emissions standards by 2010 did not come to fruition due, principally, to a lack of appropriate fuels.  Under the Department of Energy's Clean Fuels 2 (CF2) programme it was subsequently envisaged that a Euro 5 equivalent standard would be introduced from 2017 but this has also been delayed. However, some 10 ppm sulphur diesel has become available on the market.
