Emissions legislation in China is the responsibility of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (formerly the Ministry of Environmental Protection). Separate regulations are in place for controlling emissions from non-road diesel and spark ignition engines. Stage III diesel regulations are in place since October 2014, Stage IV standards have been published in draft form.

For small spark ignition engines, Stage II standards are in place since 1 January 2013 for non-hand held equipment and since 1 January 2015 for hand held equipment.
