Australia - Fuel Economy & CO2 emissions

Status

The Federation Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has been instrumental in coordinating industry efforts to adhere to voluntary codes of practice to improve passenger car fuel economy.  A key target was for a reduction of CO2 emissions from 252 g/km in 2002 to 222 g/km in 2010.  According to the FCAI, the 2010 target had almost been reached by 2008 [1].

In 2011 the government issued a public discussion document seeking industry views on proposed mandatory CO2 emission standards to be imposed from 2015, for light duty vehicles. This has not been instigated but a ministerial forum has been established which is tasked with reviewing CO2 emissions limitation strategies.
